Here under is given the short description of the sixteen Sanskaars- 1. Garbhaadhaan sanskaar - This is the first sanskaar. For this sanskaar the husband and the wife must have pure thoughts. 2. Punsavan sanskaar - This sanskaar is performed after three months of conception. Its done for the proper development of the fetus. 3. Seemantonnayan sanskaar - This sanskaar is performed after the sixth or eighth month of conception. This sanskaar is done for the mental development of the child. In this sanskaar the mother is inspired to have excellent thoughts through different holy symbols and inspirational stories. 4. Jaatkarm sanskaar - This sanskaar is performed after the birth of the child. In this sanskaar the Ved mantras are chanted. 5. Naamkaran sanskaar - This sanskaar is performed on the tenth or eleventh day after the birth. In this sanskaar the newly born child is given the name. 6. Nishkraman sanskaar - This is performed after the third or fourth month of the birth. In this sanskaar the child is taken out of the house. 7. What is a Toran -
A Toran is a small board made of wood. It has a symbol of swaastik and a painting ( picture ) of Lord Ganesh on it. Toran is a symbol of auspiciousness and prosperity. According to some other legend Toran is a symbol of victory. The Toran is hung on the main gate of the bride's home. Toran Puja or Toran Maarnaa --
Toran puja, which is popularly known as Toran Maarnaa, is an important ritual of the Hindu marriage, particularly in Rajasthan and in some other adjoining states. How is Toran Puja performed - The bride groom reaches the bride's home with his friends, relatives and other Baratis. He rides on a mare. The mother of the bride and other women welcome him ( the bride groom ) at the gate. She does his Aarti also. The Pandit recites some holy Mantras. Then the puja of the Toran is performed. After this puja, the bride groom touches the Toran with a stick or a sword. Legend -
According to a legend, there was a demon whose name was Toran, who stood at the gate of a city to guard it. He did not let the gods enter the city to worship etc. He also put obstacles in the marriages and other auspicious activities. Only after killing him, the gods were able to enter the city easily. Since then this ritual is known as 'Toran Maarnaa'. The touching of the Toran with a stick or a sward by the bride groom is symbolic of killing the demon Toran.
There are several rites and rituals which are observed during the Hindu marriage ceremony. Saat Phere and Saptpadi are also included in them.
Saat Phere -
The rite of phere begins with Laazaa Homa ( Yagya Ahuti ) For laaza homa, the leaves of khejari tree, the leaves of Palash tree, the khele of rice, all soaked in Ghee , are divided into four parts. Then the bride's sister stands beside his sister and touches these things to the bride's hand. Then on behalf of his sister, he gives three Aahutees ( puts these things into the holy fire three times).
While giving these three Aahutees the bride and the bride groom go around the holy fire. The bride goes ahead of the bride groom.
After it, the fourth Aahutee is given. At this time the bride groom goes ahead of the bride and they both move around the holy fire.
This Laazaa homa is the symbol of good luck. The purpose of this homa is to make a prayer and have a wish for the long life of the bride groom.
Sapt Padi -
After the Laazaa Homa ritual, the bride groom makes the toe of the bride's right foot touch one of the seven circles made of rice and Gulaal - one by one and every time says the following things--
1. The bride groom says," O, dear, I ask you to put your first step to make you the mistress of food grains etc. in my house."
2. The bride groom says, "O, dear, I ask you to put your second step so that you may become strong and powerful."
3. The bride groom says, "O, dear, I ask you to put your third step, so that you may earn fame and wealth in life."
4. the bride groom says, "O, dear, I ask you to put your fourth step so that you may have pleasures and facilities in life.
5. The bride groom says, "O, dear, I ask you to put your fifth step for the growth of wealth in the form of cows."
6. The bride groom says, "O, dear, I ask you to put your sixth step so that you may enjoy health and happiness during all the six seasons."
7. The bride groom says, "O, dear, I ask you to put your seventh step so that you may enjoy all the seven pleasures of the world and always remain devoted to your husband like Jaanki."
After this ritual the bride and the bride groom take their seats.
In the year 2016 Sharad Purnima / Kojagari Purnima / Kojagari Vrat / Sharad Purnima Vrat is on Saturday, 15.10.2016 .
Important things :-
(1) Ashvin Shukla Purnima is known as Sharad Purnima or Kojagari Purnima.
(2) Kojagari means- who is awake? It is believed that on the night of Sharad Purnima , Indra riding on his elephant Eravat and Lakshmi visit every house and ask , " Who is awake ?" And they bless those who are awake. So people remain awake the whole night.They sing religious songs or tell and listen to religious stories.
(2) It is also believed that on this night , the moon light is very bright and the moon showers Amrit through its rays. So people prepare Kheer ( a sweet dish made of milk and rice) and place it in the moonlight through out the night. Next day it is offered to God and distributed as the Prasad to the people.It is said that this Kheer has the power to remove the physical ailments.
(3) Some people believe that threading a needle in the moonlight improves one's eyesight. So they thread a needle in the moonlight.
(4) It is also believed that Lord Krishna started Raas Lila from this night.
(5) Kartik Snan, a holy bath also starts from this day.
Kojagari Vrat :-
The people who observe Kojagari Vrat should worship goddess Lakshmi on the night of Sharad Purnima. The Vrati ( the person who observes fast ) should light at least one hundred earthen lamps at different places like in a temple,on the way,at the cross road, in the streets, on the roof of the houses, in the garden, near the Tulsi plant etc.
Next day in the morning the Vrati should feed the Brahmin with Kheer and give him some money as Dakshina which is considered very fruitful.
Sharad Purnima Vrat:-
The persons who observe fast on Sharad Purnima should get up early in the morning take a bath and worship gods and goddesses.They should make Kheer in the evening and place it in the moonlight. Next day they should offer it to gods and goddesses and distribute it as Prasad. It is believed that the women who keep this fast, their children remain alive and enjoy a long and healthy life.

Karva Chauth is a festival and Vrat which is very popular among married women in north India. The married Hindu women observe strict fast for the good health and long life of their husbands. According to Vaman Puran this ritual of fasting falls on the Krishna Paksh Chaturthi in the month of Kartik. The married women worship Shiv ,Parvati , Kartikey and the moon. For the worship they fill the Karva, a small pot made of clay, with water and put Ber , Aanvala ,Kachara etc.in this pot.On this pot a bowel full of sugar and a piece of blouse are also kept. In the evening the women wear special clothes , usually a red or pink sari. They gather in a group and worship Shiv , Parvati , Kartikey and the moon. Then they narrate mythological stories emphasising the significance of Karva Chauth. When the moon rises , they give water (arghya) to it. Then they break their fast.

On Dashmi Tithi of Shukal Paksh of Jeshtha , the holy river Ganga came down to the earth from heaven. So taking a bath in the river Ganga is considered to be very auspicious. And if it is not possible to bathe in the Ganga , people can have a bath in the nearby river or at other places with the feeling as if they are having a bath in the river Ganga. After taking a bath, they should sit at a peaceful place and worship the river Ganga chanting the following Mantra :- "Om Namah Shivayai Naaraayanyai Dasharaayai Gangaayai Namah." " ॐ नमः शिवायै नारायण्यै दशहरायै गंगायै नमः।" Donations :-
If the person wants to donate things , the quantity of the things should be ten in number. Giving donations removes the sins of the person. While giving donations, chant the Mantra - " Gangaayai Namah. " ' गंगायै नमः'।
Sapt Shloki Durga is the seven verses which are the part of devi Mahatmaya . It is a prayer to goddess Durga who has divine powers . When the person recites these shlokas with full faith , devotion and concentration ,he will receive the blessings of goddess Durga and will be successful in is efforts By the grace of goddess he (the devotee), will get health, wealth , good family life and knowledge of different fields. When the person has problems , Devi Durga removes them and fills him with happiness. The process of Jap :-
After taking a bath in the morning, sit on a piece of woolen cloth at a peaceful place facing east or north. Keep a picture of Devi Durga in front of you , meditate on Devi Durga and have a feeling that Devi Durga has the power to provide her devotees with all kind of riches and happiness. She can remove the problems , fear , sorrows and poverty from the life of the person who goes to her shelter and prays to her .
Then pray to Durga to fulfill your desires and remove your problems if you have any. Then everyday recite the following seven shlokas (verses)eleven times or seven times or five times with full devotion for at least three months .The shlokas are as follows :-

Sarvopakaar Karaay Sadaardra chitta. 2. दुर्गे स्मृता हरसि भीति मशेषजन्तो: , स्वस्थै: स्मृता मतिमतीव शुभां ददासि। दारिद्र्य दुःख भय हारिणि का त्वदन्या , सर्वोपकार करणाय सदार्द्र चित्ता।। 3.Sarva Mangal Mangalye Shive Sarvaarth Saadhike. Sharanye Tryambake Gauri Naaraayani Namostu Te. 3.सर्व मंगल मंगल्ये शिवे सर्वार्थ साधिके। शरण्ये त्र्यम्बके गौरि नारायणि नमोSस्तु ते।। 4. Sharanaagat Deenaart Paritraana Paraayane. Sarva Syaartihare Devi Naaraayani Namostu Te. 4. शरणागत दीनार्त परित्राण परायणे। सर्वस्यार्तिहरे देवि नारायणि नमोSस्तु ते।। 5.Sarvaswaroope Sarveshe Sarvashaktisamanvite. Bhayebhyastraahi No Devi Durge Devi Namostu te. 5.सर्व स्वरूपे सर्वेशे सर्वशक्ति समन्विते। भयेभ्य स्त्राहि नो देवि दुर्गे देवि नमोSस्तु ते।। 6.Rogaansheshaanapahansi Tushtaa. Rushtaa Tu Kaamaan Sakalaanbheeshtaan. Twaamaashritaanaam Na Vipannaraanaam. Twaamaashritaa Hyaashrayatam Prayaanti. 6.रोगानशेषानपहंसि तुष्टा , रुष्टा तु कामान सकलानभीष्टान। त्वामा श्रितानां न विपन्नराणां त्वामाश्रिता ह्याश्रयतां प्रयान्ति।। 7. Sarvaabaadhaa Prashamanm Trailokyasyaakhileshvari. Evmeva Twyaakaaryamasmdwairivinaashanam. 7.सर्वाबाधा प्रशमनं त्रैलोक्य स्याखिलेश्वरि। एवमेव त्वया कार्य मस्म द्वैरिविनाशनं।।

करमूले स्थितो ब्रह्मा प्रभाते करदर्शनम।। Meanig -Goddess Laxmi resides on the tips of the fingers , Goddess Sarswati resides in the centre of the palms. On the wrist i.e. in the end part of the hands Lord Brahmaa resides. So person should look at his palms in the morning.
After chanting this shlok, rub both the palms together and move them slowly over your head , shoulders , arms and legs. It creates an energy shield which wards off the negative influences for the whole of the day ( After karavlokan pray to earth as follows:- ) Prayer to earth - After getting up from your bed and before putting your feet on the earth , greet mother earth and pray to her and request her to forgive you for putting your feet on her. Visarjan Day or Immersion Day of God Ganesh idols :- Shukla paksh Chaturdashi of Bhadrapad (which is also known as Anant Chaturdashi) Important things - 1. When is Rakhi / Raksha Bandhan in the year 2017 In the year 20167 Raksha Bandhan or Rakhi is on Monday, 07 August 2017 The Muhurat or the auspicious time for tying Rakhi is - On 07.08.2017 Bhadra is up to 11.07 (prohibited period) and Chadragrahan Sootak begins from 13.52 (prohibited period) . So proper Muhurat for Rakhi tying is - Abhijit Muhurat - from 12:17 to 13:10 ( or ) Shubh Chaughadiya - from 17:31 to 19:08. Note -Raksha Bandhan ritual must not be done during Bhadra kal or Bhadra period . Bhadra period is inauspicious period which should be avoided for all auspicious work. Hindu scriptures advise to avoid Bhadra time to tie Rakhi during Rakha Bandhan festival. How to tie Rakhi - The sister applies Tilak and rice on the forehead of the brother. Then she ties Rakhi on the right wrist of the brother and prays for his long life and feed him some sweet. In return the brother gives his sister some good gifts in the form of cash and kind and promises to protect her.
It is better to chant the following Mantra while tying the Rakhi :- Yen baddho Bali Raajaa daanvendro mahaabalah , Ten twaamnubadhnaami rakshe maa chal maa chal . The importance of Rakhi / Raksha Bandhan - Rakhi is a thread which is the symbol of affection and a bond of protection. Sisters have strong faith that Rakhi has the power to ward off harms and dangers through the year. Brothers also have faith in the command to save their sisters in all the difficulties and miseries.

Two of them are known as Prakat Navratra or open Nanratra and the remaining two are known as Gupt Navrata or secret Navratra .The Gupt navratras come two times a year . The Gupt Navratra which comes in Ashadh month is known as Aashadhi Gupt Navrata or Varsha Ritu Gupt Navratra . And the Gupt Navratra which come in the month of Magh is known as Maghi Gupt Navratra or Shishir Navratra .

'Navratra ' is the combination of two words 'Nav' and 'Ratri' . Nav means nine and Ratri means night. Thus Navratra is the festival which lasts for nine days. This period of nine days is considered auspicious. It is also the period of Aradhana and Upasana. During this period nine forms of goddess Durga are worshiped. Their names are :-
1. Shail putri 2. Brahmacharini 3. Chadraghanta 4. Kushmanda 5. Skandmata 6. Katyayani 7. Kalratri 8. Mahagauri 9. Sidddhidatri.

These two navratras are known assecret or Gupt navratra. The process of worship :-
Navratra is the period of getting spiritual and moral strength. Those who worship Maa Durga with complete devotion and dedication, get wealth , prosperity and enlightenment with the grace of Maa Durga. Their sufferings from their life are removed. Ghat / Kalash sthapana :-
On the first day of navratra , Ghat sthapna or Kalash sthapna is done. Ghat or Kalas means a pot made of clay or copper and sthapna means installing. So Ghat sthapna is the installing a pot. The Ghat or kalash is filled with water and it is placed on the Vedi of sand. Seeds of barley are sown in the sand around the Ghat or kalash. By the end of the navratra , these barley plants known as Jaware, would have grown up to four or five inches. The Jaware are given as Prasad to the devotees and the members of the family. (Some people sow the barley seeds in a separate pot.) On the kalash mango leaves and coconut covered with a piece of cloth are also placed. Ghat or kalash sthapana is mainly the prayer and invitation to goddess Durga to stay in the kalash till the navratra ends. Whom to worship and what to chant or jap during Navratra:-

(e) Jap of Mantras according to your choice as Mantra for wealth , Mantra for power, Mantra for removing problems , for getting suitable husband or wife , for getting protection etc. Kumari Pujan :- On the Ashthami or Navmi Tithi , nine girls ( not above nine years old ) are fed, worshiped and given Dakshina. Navratra Utthapan :-
On the ninth or tenth day, the Pooja material is immersed in the near by lake or pond. The Jaware ( the plants of barley ) are given to the members of the family and other persons as Prasad. With this Utthapan process the festival of Navratra comes to an end.
