It is believed that Vikram Samvat was started in 56 B. C. by the emperor Vikramditya of Ujjain. The Vikram Samvat or Hindu traditional year is based on Lunar months and solar months. In the north India the new Samvat (year) begins on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada and and in Gujarat etc it begins on Kartik Shukla Pratipada.

The Mantri (Minister)of this Samwatsar  is Budh (Mercury). When the Mantri in the year is Budha, people indulge in entertaining activities. crops are usually good.
